Can I charge my car from a normal plug socket instead?

You can, but it is slow and hard on the socket. A three pin lead delivers around 2kW, so a full charge can take a day or more, and the socket runs warm the whole time. A dedicated charge point is around three times faster and built for the job.

How far can the charger be from my fuse box?

Longer runs are possible, but the cable has to be sized for the distance so the voltage does not drop too far. Twenty metres is common and straightforward. Beyond that we work the cable size out on the visit and include it in the quote.

Do I need a smart meter for a home charge point?

Not to have the charger fitted, but you will need one to get an off peak EV tariff, which is where the savings sit. The charger itself has to be smart by law, so it can schedule charging and record what it has used.
